    BLUEPRINT NARRATIVE

    Bringing the old
    back to life.

In this fast-paced world, where consumerism is taking over and nothing feels original anymore, helping our clients preserve history is one of the most rewarding and unique projects we undertake – and we hope there are many more to come. Rather than dismissing the old, we bring it back to life with upgraded security and modern performance.

Period homes often feature beautiful entrance doors with intricate stained glass. While certain things are not meant to last forever, their value and heritage can often be salvaged and preserved.

    THE BRIEF

A period home in the heart of Barnes.

Situated in the heart of Barnes, one of London’s most sought-after period neighbourhoods, the property forms part of a streetscape characterised by historic architecture and original detailing. In an area where heritage and character are highly valued, preserving the original stained glass and faithfully replicating the door’s design was particularly important for this project.

The challenge was not only to improve security and thermal performance, but to do so in a way that respected the architectural identity of both the property and its surroundings.

    THE ORIGINAL DOOR

    Beautiful, but no longer safe.

The original door, although beautiful and carrying decades of stories and history, needed to be protected. It was draft prone, rotting, and unsafe – something commonly found in doors from this period across the UK. With rising crime rates and home break-ins over the years, our homes, and indeed we ourselves, need to adapt to a changing world.

The client, whose background is in science and energy, had a clear goal: to replicate the original design while preserving the existing stained glass. This is exactly what we specialise in. However, although the original glass retained its appearance and character, it would not have met the level of security the client was aiming for and would not have been sufficient on its own.

    THE PROCESS

Historic glass, encapsulated for the century ahead.

The process involved carefully extracting the original stained glass and encapsulating it between security glazing, creating a triple-glazed security unit.

This not only protects the original glass from weathering and preserves it for many years to come, but also makes it extremely difficult to break – one of the key objectives of the project.

    THE BUILD

Steel core, wood clad, faithfully detailed.

The completed glass unit was then installed into a new bespoke metal-structured door with wood cladding. The door was thermally insulated with rock mineral wool and fitted with FIAM 678 three-directional security lock.

As always, we achieved our standard high-security rated door while incorporating heritage into the design. The mouldings and baguette detailing were replicated to match the original door as closely as possible, preserving its character and appearance.

    THE RESULT

    A safe space
    for stories to continue.

By bringing together the old and the new, we created a safe space for both the historic glass and the stories it carries, while providing the client with a secure, high-performing entrance door that respects and protects the heritage of their home.

The client also shared their thoughts in a Google review about their experience how we helped them achieve that goal.
